A yearning for the emptiness
When I come across a banal, hollow landscape, I photograph it as a « romantic » painting: zero effects, no enhancements. I am just trying to be stronger than this big nothing.
My observations of our modern landscape focus on the outskirts of cities (fragments of buildings, facades, abandoned places, urban areas, malls, billboards) generally deprived of human presence.
To me, this commonness has its own aesthetic: it speaks to our physical and mental environment, the vanishing of the separation which existed between cities and suburbs, suburbs and countryside, a process leading to an image with no defined identity.
This aesthetic of the void in my photographic work attempts to embrace our contemporary environment. It speaks probably about a life in « de-civilization ».
